Have you noticed how expensive nut milk has gotten? 

I recently went to put a good approved brand in my cart at my local health food store and I almost fell over seeing it was almost $10 and would only last my family 2-3 days. 

Opting for store bought plant-based milk can be tough on the wallet. But did you know you can make nut milk on your own with very simple ingredients and it’s half the price?

I made homemade coconut milk and I highly recommend you try it out yourself. It’s so easy! 

When you make nut milk homemade, it ensures there are no added seed oils, sugar, or other inflammatory fillers. 

And this recipe calls for a few special ingredients that make it extra delicious. 

I prefer coconut milk over other dairy free milk options because it’s the best choice for gut health and autoimmunity.

Coconut milk is rich in healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids and medium chain triglycerides (MCT fats). 

It’s really important to have a higher omega-3 to omega-6 ratio when it comes to reducing inflammation. This means we want to reduce omega-6 fats and bulk up on those omega-3 and anti-inflammatory fats like coconut milk! 

Omega-3 fatty acids and MCT fats are anti-inflammatory for the gut, promote healthier gut bacteria, help balance your blood sugar, and promote healthy cell growth. 

These healthy fats are so essential for your body to function properly, especially when working on healing the gut and reversing autoimmunity! This is why coconut milk is my go-to choice for myself and my clients.

How to Make Coconut Milk Homemade

Dairy-free doesn’t have to break the bank… Learn how to make homemade coconut milk in 3 easy steps.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups Unsweetened Coconut Flakes
  • 4 cups Water (filtered)
  • 2 tbsps Pitted Dates
  • 1/8 tsp Cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a blender, add the coconut flakes and water. Blend until smooth, at least one minute.
  2. Over a large bowl or pot, strain the pulp using a cheesecloth, nut milk bag, or a fine mesh sieve.
  3. Add the strained milk back into the blender. Add the date and cinnamon, if using, and blend until smooth. Transfer to a large jar or pitcher and enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage: Refrigerate in an airtight glass container for up to four days. Shake well before using.
  • No Dates: Use maple syrup instead.
  • Leftover Coconut Pulp: Store in the fridge or freezer and use in cookies or smoothies.

One of my favorite ways to use coconut milk is by incorporating it in my morning smoothies.  It’s creamier than other dairy-free milks and helps balance my smoothie with good fats.
