Slippery elm for acid reflux is gaining in popularity, as acid reflux affects about 20% of American adults. While it might be a common ailment, it certainly isn’t normal. Experiencing reflux at least three days per week may indicate deeper issues and imbalances in the digestive system and microbiome. However, there are natural ways to address acid reflux, including the powerful remedy: slippery elm!
Acid reflux is a result of lower esophageal sphincter (LES) dysfunction. When the sphincter does not close properly, it can cause stomach acid to rise up into the throat. This backflow of acid can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms.
Common symptoms of acid reflux include:
While acid reflux affects many Americans, it can be addressed by healing the root cause.

According to the Western medical community, acid reflux is most commonly caused by the production of too much stomach acid. It is also often attributed to other factors, such as obesity, pregnancy, and stomach ulcers.
However, these factors may contribute to acid reflux but are not the root cause. The most common root causes of acid reflux include:
When one or more of these causes are present, they can trigger gut dysfunction and lead to the backflow of stomach acid.
As tempting as it may be to take Tums or medication to reduce acid reflux, conventional treatment for acid reflux involves suppressing stomach acid production further (which is the opposite of what we want to do for long-term relief).
Common medications include antacids, H2 blockers, proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), and alginates. While they might provide short-term relief, these common medications can backfire in the long term for many reasons.
When you suppress acid production in the stomach, it can hinder the gut’s ability to properly digest food and absorb nutrients. The presence of stomach acid and enzymes plays a huge role in digestion and nutrient absorption. Eventually the gut lining gets inflamed and can contribute to intestinal inflammation (leaky gut).
In addition, without proper stomach acid in the gut, the risk of bacterial overgrowth and rebound reflux increases. Stomach acid helps kill off pathogenic bacteria in the gut, including candida, h. Pylori, and others.
Alike many prescriptions and medications, acid blockers often mask symptoms without addressing the root causes (mentioned above). In the long run, this can lead to recurring or worsening symptoms because the root cause is still at play.
While conventional medications for acid reflux may provide short term symptom relief, it almost always worsens symptoms in the long run. Until the root cause is addressed, symptom management will continue to be necessary.

Slippery Elm for acid reflux is not new to the scene! It is naturally found within the inner bark and mucilage of the Ulmus Rubra tree found in North America. It is considered to be a therapeutic remedy for a variety of health conditions and illnesses, but it can be especially beneficial for the gut. It is packed with nutrients, minerals, and anti–inflammatory properties.
Historically, slippery elm has been used by Native Americans and in Ayurvedic medicine for medicinal purposes. It is known for it’s impressive healing properties, which can aid in the healing of burns, ulcers, sore throats, coughs, and more.
When it comes to slippery elm for acid reflux, the key benefits include:
Slippery elm creates a soothing gel-like barrier in the esophagus. This can help manage symptoms by reducing burning or throat irritation.
As a potent anti-inflammatory, slippery elm provides a rich source of antioxidants and polyphenols. Together, these support the healing of a damaged mucosal lining in the gut, which can reduce acid reflux.
Slipper elm promotes digestive regularity and motility, providing gentle support for bloating, constipation, or indigestion. Regulate bowel movements can in acid reflux management.
Since slippery elm supplementation is safe for long-term use, it complements other gut-healing therapies, such as DGL, aloe vera, L-glutamine, and probiotics. Together, these herbs and nutrients can provide powerful gut support.

Slippery elm can be used in multiple ways to address acid reflux, such as:
Supplement forms of slippery elm include:
Always consume slippery elm 30–60 minutes before meals or before bed. This allows for optimal absorption.
For powder forms, start slow with dosing. Start with 1/2 tsp powder in water, then work up, if well tolerated. Take with warm water to create a soothing drink.
As previously mentioned, slippery elm can be a powerful part of gut healing protocol.
When healing the gut for acid reflux, you can pair slippery elm with the following for even better results:
As always, consult with your functional medicine practitioner or functional nutritionist for ideal dosing and timing based on your needs and goals.
In rare cases, it is possible to experience a sensitivity to slippery elm. Take special precaution if you have a known tree allergy. It is also important to note that slippery elm may interfere with medication absorption. Always take medications at least 1–2 hours apart from slippery elm.

In addition to slippery elm supplementation, there are also lifestyle changes that can help support acid reflux management:
Prioritize anti-inflammatory foods. Build meals around protein, healthy fats, and fibrous carbs. Otherwise known as PFCs. Avoid inflammatory triggers such as: gluten, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and sugar.

Due to the mind-body connection, it’s important to always be in a state of rest-and-digest during meals. Avoid eating meals while stressed, do not rush through meals, and chew every bite thoroughly (ideally 22 times). You can also refrain from liquids during meal time to support digestion and nutrient absorption further.

Functional testing can be extremely beneficial when symptoms are ongoing, even with herbal support. In this case, underlying infections, such as H. pylori and SIBO, food sensitivities, or chronic inflammation may be to blame. Functional testing can help identify these root causes.
In addition, stool testing can identify elastase levels which help us identify low stomach acid and enzyme production.
Acid reflux and gut dysfunction are highly bio-individual. Meaning, there is no one-fits-all approach. It’s important to find in-depth support and implement personalized protocols for lasting healing.
When it comes to acid reflux, symptom management and suppression isn’t enough. It’s necessary to identify and address the root causes.
