Red light is used for more than just traffic lights and photography darkrooms. In fact, red light has been shown to aid in many chronic health conditions, such as joint pain, inflammation, and skin problems. And that’s just the short list. Red light therapy at home can be a life-changing approach to healing for many. And, it’s a cost effective, convenient therapy done in the comfort of your own home. Is red light therapy at home right for you?

WHAT IS RED LIGHT?

Red light is a long wavelength, low frequency light. Unlike other types of light (ie. white or blue), red light can penetrate through the skin and help with the production of cellular energy. And, as opposed to sunlight, it doesn’t contain any damaging UV rays. This helps explain why red light therapy can be so helpful in improving specific medical or cosmetic conditions.

Red light therapy (RLT), also known as photobiomodulation, has become increasingly popular in recent years. This is due to its impressive impact on various health conditions.

This safe and effective therapy utilizes red light to help improve the following conditions:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Scarring
  • Arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Muscle pain
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Alopecia
  • And more

One of the best parts about red light therapy is it is considered to be a safe, non-toxic approach to healing. It is also an affordable practice that you can do in the comfort of your own home, (but more on that below)!

RED LIGHT VS. BLUE LIGHT

These two types of light therapy are two distinct forms of phototherapy that utilize different wavelengths of light to achieve specific therapeutic effects. Red light therapy typically employs wavelengths in the range of 620 to 700 nanometers, while blue light therapy utilizes wavelengths around 405 to 470 nanometers. These wavelengths penetrate the skin to different depths, influencing cellular processes and triggering various biological responses.

Red light therapy is known for its ability to stimulate the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in cells, promoting cell repair and regeneration. It has been used for wound healing, reducing inflammation, and improving skin conditions.

On the other hand, blue light therapy is primarily recognized for its antibacterial properties, particularly in the context of treating acne. Blue light can penetrate the skin and activate certain compounds, like porphyrins, within bacteria, leading to their destruction.

Both therapies showcase the potential of light in influencing biological processes, although their targeted wavelengths determine the specific therapeutic outcomes they achieve.

RED LIGHT AND MITOCHONDRIA

Mitochondria are known to be the “powerhouses” of our cells. They are responsible for producing ATP, or biological energy.  In other words, mitochondria produce the energy we need to live, breathe, and survive. When mitochondria function is subpar, typically as a result of modern day influences, it can result in fatigue and other common symptoms of chronic disease. Many modern day factors contribute to poor mitochondrial function, such as chronic exposure to heavy metals, mold, pollution, EMFs, GMOs, pesticides/herbicides, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, blue light, processed foods, a sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep, gene mutations, and more.

So, what do mitochondria have to do with red light therapy? Red light therapy has been shown to counteract the negative effects of these modern day factors on our mitochondria, paving the way for a new approach to healing. Here’s how: mitochondria contain chromophores, which absorb light in the red wavelength. When red light is absorbed by the chromophores, photobiomodulation occurs, which increases mitochondrial function. This ignites a trickle down effect that results in increased energy production for our bodies to use. Essentially, red light therapy boosts mitochondrial function, boosts energy production, and can result in many health benefits!

HEALTH BENEFITS OF RED LIGHT THERAPY AT HOME

As previously mentioned, one of the most appealing things about red light therapy is that it can be done comfortably at home

There are many health benefits that can result from doing red light therapy at home, including:

  • Improving skin conditions
  • Improves blood flow and circulation
  • Healing scarring
  • Fighting wrinkles and acne
  • Supporting the immune system
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Reducing pain in joints and muscles
  • Supporting thyroid function
  • Improving recovery time
  • Repairing soft connective tissue
  • Supporting stable mood
  • Increasing energy
  • Activates DNA/RNA synthesis
  • Supporting lymphatic drainage and gentle detoxification
  • Improving muscle recovery
  • Increasing collagen production
  • Reduces free radical damage and aging

Red light therapy is likely best known for its ability to heal or reduce skin problems, such as scarring. However, as we now know how red light influences our mitochondria, it’s clear that it can also support the body on a foundational level.

RED LIGHT THERAPY & YOUR SKIN

Red light therapy offers a non-invasive and effective solution for enhancing the appearance of the skin by addressing various aesthetic concerns. Its ability to stimulate collagen production is particularly noteworthy, as collagen is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. This collagen-boosting effect contributes to a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, promoting a more youthful complexion. Additionally, red light therapy supports skin regeneration, making it beneficial for minimizing the visibility of scars and improving overall skin texture. Its anti-inflammatory properties further contribute to a smoother complexion by reducing redness and inflammation associated with scars.

The therapy’s holistic approach, influencing collagen synthesis, blood circulation, and tissue repair, makes it an incredible tool for anyone seeking to enhance their skin health and radiance!

RED LIGHT THERAPY & GUT HEALTH

Understanding how red light therapy and gut health are connected involves looking at how the light affects our body, especially the digestive system. Red light therapy, which uses specific wavelengths, has been found to influence our internal body clock and the production of melatonin, a sleep-related hormone. This influence, in turn, affects how our gut works, including how it moves and digests food.

Red light therapy also has anti-inflammatory properties, and this could be helpful for calming down any inflammation or stress in our digestive system. Inside our gut, there’s a vital community of microorganisms that help with digestion and support our immune system. Disruptions in this community can cause health problems. Early research suggests that red light therapy helps keep this community balanced and healthy. This is a promising, proven approach for promoting better gut health!

RED LIGHT THERAPY & AUTOIMMUNITY

In addition to its benefits for digestive health, red light therapy has also shown promise in supporting those with autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues. Red light therapy’s anti-inflammatory effects and ability to modulate the immune response suggest a potential role in managing autoimmune conditions. By reducing inflammation and promoting cellular repair, red light therapy may help alleviate symptoms associated with autoimmune disorders.

Recent studies indicate that red light therapy could have immunomodulatory effects, helping to regulate the immune system’s response and potentially preventing it from attacking the body’s own cells. These early findings suggest a promising avenue for exploring non-invasive, light-based interventions in the realm of autoimmune health.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO RLT?

Every person is unique and will respond differently to RLT. It is always best to aim for at least 8-12 weeks of consistent use to see improvement using red light. As always it is best to consult with a qualified health practitioner and ideally functional medicine expert who can guide you with a plan to incorporate RLT into your routine.

Most individuals do best starting slowly and gradually increasing time spent under a red light. Reactions are possible so it is helpful to ease into it and see how your body responds. Protective eyewear and proper distance is important for success and how often RLT can and should be used.

Although there are low risks associated with using RLT, it is important to note most adverse reactions reported are due to improper use or overuse.

THE BEST RED LIGHT THERAPY DEVICE

Red light therapy can be done in salons or clinics. In fact, this used to be the only way red light therapy was accessible. But, it was costly, running around $200 per session. Fortunately for us, red light therapy at home is now a feasible option, and often the more affordable one!

My favorite at-home red light therapy device is Lumebox! Lumebox is a compact, yet powerful handheld device, making it extremely versatile. Since you can hold it with one hand, it can be used on almost any part of the body. It’s also small enough to travel with or keep tucked away in a closet or drawer when not in use.

Functionally, it provides both red and near infrared light, without damaging UV rays. It’s also proven to be a low EMF device, which is extremely important for our health and wellbeing. It’s also independently tested (yay!) and a class II mediode  light therapy device on the market, in my opinion. If you’re ready to reap the benefits of red light therapy at home, you can use my code “nikkyeltonrd” to save over 40% off on your Lumebox purchase!
