Collagen has a remarkable ability to heal, seal, and repair the gut lining, which results in improved overall gut health. It is also proven to support autoimmune disease, boost digestion, and more. That’s why this simple morning ritual has quickly become my favorite collagen latte for gut health!

WHAT IS COLLAGEN?

Collagen is an essential nutrient for overall health, including G.I., skin, bone, joint, heart, and more.

What’s the deal with collagen? Is it really everything it claims to be? In my professional opinion, yes! Collagen actually plays an important role in any healthy diet. It boosts health from head-to-toe, including gut, skin, hair, joints, and bone!

In fact, I personally use collagen daily and recommend it to most of my patients! Curious to learn why? You can learn more and read the 8 reasons why I love collagen here.

RECIPE DETAILS

Now onto the recipe! This recipe contains collagen for leaky gut and antioxidant rich matcha for energy! The key is to make this recipe while using a vitamix blender to get it creamy and frothy. If you are in a rush or don’t have a Vitamix, try using a handheld milk frother. Full disclosure, I’m that girl who carries one of these with me when I’m traveling and don’t have access to a blender. They key to good matcha is to make sure you are mixing it well first!

COCONUT MILK

I prefer coconut milk for this recipe because it makes the latte extra creamy. Coconut milk also contains natural Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) fats which provide anti-inflammatory benefits for the gut. It’s also the milk of choice for those with an autoimmune condition. The best brands of coconut milk would be the ones you would get from a health food store that don’t contain any gums, binders, or fillers. These are hard to come by, but worth the search if you are in the gut healing process.

Another quick tip for this recipe is to make your own coconut milk using full fat canned coconut milk. All you have to do is stir the contents of the can and scoop out 2-3 tbsp. Mix that with filtered water and boom, you have a gum free homemade coconut milk! This is also the most cost-effective option because you get about 8 servings per can.

If you can’t do coconut milk and looking for a good dairy free milk without additives, both Elmhurst and Malk have a great selection of unsweetened nut milk varieties.

COLLAGEN PROTEIN

There are various types of collagen, including types I, II, III, IV, V, and X. It’s important to know the various benefits of each type, as they affect different parts of the body. Again, you can read more about that in this blog post.

Choosing a high quality collagen that is lab tested for heavy metals, non-GMO, and comes from pasture-raised grass fed cows is essential. Otherwise, collagen can do more harm than good. For my clients, I prefer they get their collagen from a medical grade company, such as Ortho Molecular CollaGen from Fullscript (a practitioner only online supplement dispensary).

Besides a medical grade collagen option, this is one of the best hydrolyzed collagen protein powders I found based on their high quality and incredible lab testing. This recipe calls for 1 serving of collagen. As always, you should consult your physician or healthcare practitioner before starting any new supplement.

MATCHA

Matcha green tea naturally contains catechin, a powerful antioxidant that is more than 130 times the power regular green tea. Antioxidants help to scavenge free radicals, which are compounds that damage the cells in the body overtime and can lead to chronic disease and aging.

Due to its antioxidant power, matcha can support brain health, liver detoxification, weight loss, energy, and healthy lipid and cholesterol levels. It’s really important you choose a ceremonial grade matcha powder, one that is high quality and tested for molds and heavy metals.

For this recipe, use a matcha whisk or the handheld milk frother to combine 1 serving of matcha powder to 2 tbsp of hot water first.

SWEETENER

For this recipe, I used maple syrup but you can also use honey or coconut sugar. You can learn more about the best natural sweeteners for gut health in this blog post. I find the coconut milk makes this latte naturally sweet, and you might find you can omit sweetener altogether.

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil is high in MCT fats that helps provide fuel for your brain and body. It is also one of the best fats to use for those who are working on healing the gut or for those who have an autoimmune condition. It is on my “fab 5 fats” list to help reduce inflammation. Another great option to take it up a notch would be to add pure MCT oil to this recipe.

RECIPE TIPS

Enjoy first thing in the morning after a glass of water. This is a great beverage to have if you need to avoid coffee or want to replace coffee. Since it does naturally contain caffeine, I suggest finding your caffeine cut off time to make sure you have enough time to metabolize the caffeine in your body. For most people, this is before noon. "When it comes to balancing our body, healing the gut, reversing autoimmunity, and achieving optimal health—we are a lot like a car that won’t run right. In order to fix the problem once and for all instead of relying on jumper cables, we must get underneath the hood, run the diagnostics, and replace the battery so that it runs good as new."
