Adding lymphatic drainage supplements into your wellness routine can support gut health, energy, and overall vitality in an impactful way! Lymphatic drainage is a simple, yet often overlooked part of overall health. The lymphatic system is closely connected to the immune system, detoxification, and circulatory system. Lymphatic drainage is a key step for the women I work with.
We will explore how lymphatic drainage supplements can boost lymphatic drainage and how you can reap the benefits of a strong lymphatic system.
Your lymphatic system is one of the many organ systems in your body. It is part of the immune system and works closely alongside the circulatory system and detoxification system. It comprises many working parts, including lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, lymph fluid, bone marrow, spleen, adenoids, tonsils, and more.
The functions of the lymphatic system include:
Given the lymphatic system’s involvement in immune function and detoxification support, this organ system is a vital part of the body and overall well being.
Lymphatic drainage is well documented. The lymphatic system plays a central role in maintaining body fluid balance and supporting immune responses, which is exactly why it touches so many parts of how you feel, from puffiness to how often you get sick. When it hums along, fluid and waste keep moving. When lymph stalls, they sit in your tissues, and that is where lymphatic drainage supplements and daily habits can support how you feel.

Dysfunction arises within the lymphatic system when lymphatic congestion occurs.
Signs of lymphatic congestion include:
A dysfunctional or sluggish lymphatic system can quickly lead to a vicious cycle: lymphatic congestion leads to poor immunity and poor immunity contributes to lymphatic congestion. The cycle can repeat itself and create more inflammation in the body contributing to fatigue.
When the lymphatic system is congested, blocked, or damaged for a period of time, it can lead to lymphedema. Lymphedema is defined as the build up of lymph fluid in the lymphatic system.
If several of these signs sound familiar, that is your cue to start supporting flow with the lifestyle strategies and lymphatic drainage supplements below, before the cycle digs in deeper.
The lymphatic system plays a large role in the immune system and detoxification. Therefore, when the body is overburdened by toxins and other stressors, it can lead to a buildup of fluid in the lymphatic system.
What factors contribute to lymph buildup?
We are exposed to toxins every day, indoors and outdoors. Many household toxins include cleaning products, skin care and beauty products, furniture, plastic storage, cookware, and more.
Environmental stressors include air pollution, heavy metals, mold, pesticides, herbicides, and more. The more toxins we are exposed to, the greater the burden on our lymphatic system. This is also why I often say that lowering your daily toxic load matters as much as any lymphatic drainage supplements you take. The less your system has to clear, the more freely it can drain!
The Standard American Diet (SAD) is full of inflammatory foods, such as packaged and processed foods, trans fats, refined sugar, GMOs, fried foods, and more. These foods not only increase inflammation in the body, but can contribute to a stagnant lymphatic system. Inflammation and congestion feed each other, so an anti-inflammatory way of eating is one of the most powerful, foundational forms of lymphatic support there is.
Experiencing chronic stress and inadequate sleep greatly increase inflammation levels. Also, increased levels of stress hormones (cortisol and adrenaline), as a result of stress and poor sleep, can weaken the immune system and contribute to fluid retention. This is a piece I see missed all the time. You can do everything else right, but if your nervous system never gets to rest, your lymphatic system can slow down.
Physical movement is one of the most effective ways to boost lymphatic drainage (more on this below). On the flip side, living a sedentary lifestyle with minimal physical activity is one of the quickest ways to support lymphatic congestion. A lack of physical movement leads to lymphatic fluid buildup and congests lymphatic pathways.
Lymphatic drainage is the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system. It moves fluid from the lymphatic system to the bloodstream and throughout the body. The lymphatic system doesn’t have a self-pumping mechanism, so lymphatic drainage only occurs during muscle contractions, physical movement, and diaphragm movement.
Since the muscle pump does the work your heart does for blood, movement can increase lymph flow several times over resting levels. That single fact is why lymphatic drainage supplements always work best alongside daily movement.
The benefits of lymphatic drainage include:
Lymphatic drainage is one of the best ways to help open detox pathways, which is an essential first step to any detoxification protocol. When a detox protocol is performed with closed or congested detox pathways, the detox is ineffective at minimum or harmful at worst.
A functional lymphatic system that freely moves fluid through the body sets up the detoxification system and immune system so they can do their jobs well.

You can support a healthy and functional lymphatic system with simple lifestyle and wellness practices, including:
Daily, you can implement specific, yet simple practices to support lymphatic drainage:
These habits are the engine your lymphatic drainage supplements need. Walking and rebounding activate the muscle pump, belly breathing acts like an internal pump through the diaphragm, and sauna and cold exposure encourage circulation.
You can also support lymphatic drainage by adopting the following skin and body practices:
Gua sha or jade rolling to drain lymph fluid in the face
Epsom salt baths with essential oils
Sweating through movement
A few minutes of dry brushing toward the heart before a shower is one of the simplest ways to stimulate surface lymph flow, and it pairs beautifully with the lymphatic drainage supplements covered below.
What you consume can support or hinder lymphatic movement. Utilize these nutrition practices for lymphatic support:
Hydration deserves a special mention here, because lymph is mostly water. When you are dehydrated, it turns thick and sluggish, and no lymphatic drainage supplements can fully make up for that.
Together, all these practices can go a long way in supporting lymphatic drainage.

Traditionally, herbs have been used for centuries to improve overall health. There are specific herbs and supplements that are generally deemed safe and effective in supporting lymphatic drainage. They can help move fluid through the lymphatic system, reduce inflammation, and promote circulation.
The top lymphatic-supporting herbs include:
A few of these lymphatic drainage supplements have especially good research behind them. Dandelion root has documented diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and choleretic effects, which means it gently helps your body release excess fluid, calms inflammation, and supports bile flow from the liver.
I personally love to make a batch of homemade dandelion tea every week and drink 1 cup daily in the morning to support daily drainage, detox, hormone balance, and energy.
Burdock root brings polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that also support the liver, and your liver and lymphatic system clear waste as a team.
Another one of my favorites, turmeric, through its active compound curcumin, offers well-studied antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that help congested tissue drain more freely.

You can support your lymphatic system with smart supplementation.
Other lymphatic drainage supplements include:
Lymphatic drainage cream to massage onto lymph nodes: Earthly Lymphatic cream twice daily, morning and evening, on lymph nodes (my personal favorite)
Electrolyte support: BodyBio E-Lyte (1-2 servings per day)
Whole-food based vitamin C: Perfect Acerola Cherry capsules (4 capsules/day)
Lymphatic tinctures: I love this Earthley blend (1 serving daily)
Herbal capsule blend: Core Formulas Lymph Drainage (1 capsule per day)
Not all of these should be taken together and at the same time. It is always best to work with a qualified healthcare provider for lymphatic drainage supplements that will work best for you and your goals.
One other important note from my practice. Lymphatic drainage supplements work best when your “exits” are already open. If your bowels are not moving daily and you are not well hydrated, mobilizing fluid and toxins before they have a way out can leave you feeling worse, not better. Start with movement, hydration, and daily elimination, then layer these supplements on top (more on this next).
While the lymphatic system plays a primary role in immune health and detoxification, it’s important not to ignore the other drainage pathways, including the liver, skin, bowels, lungs, kidneys, and emotions.
All of these drainage pathways work together, and it’s critical to pay attention to each and every one. Learn more here about how you can support drainage from head-to-toe.

The best lymphatic drainage supplements are traditional drainage and detox herbs like dandelion root, astragalus, burdock root, and turmeric, plus electrolyte and whole-food vitamin C support.
Dandelion in particular has documented diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects that make it a strong choice for supporting fluid movement.
They can, when your drainage pathways are open. Lymphatic drainage supplements help move fluid, calm inflammation, and support the liver, but they are not a substitute for movement, hydration, and daily elimination. The women who see the best results pair their supplements with those foundations.
Yes, if your bowels are backed up or you are dehydrated. Mobilizing toxins before they have a clear exit can cause your body to recirculate them, which may leave you tired or headachy. This is why it is best to open your elimination pathways first.
Yes. Your lymphatic system has no pump of its own and relies on muscle movement to flow. Movement can raise lymph flow well above resting levels, so supplements work best alongside daily movement.

"When it comes to balancing our body, healing the gut, reversing autoimmunity, and achieving optimal health—we are a lot like a car that won’t run right. In order to fix the problem once and for all instead of relying on jumper cables, we must get underneath the hood, run the diagnostics, and replace the battery so that it runs good as new."
