If you are searching for a leaky gut protocol, you probably know or suspect you have a leaky gut. Leaky Gut Syndrome is a common dysfunction in the gut. When left unaddressed, it can ignite a trickle-down effect, leading to other imbalances and dysfunctions throughout the body. Unfortunately, many conflicting approaches to addressing Leaky Gut can be confusing and overwhelming. Here’s what you need to know about Leaky Gut, including how to identify and heal it.
If you’re new here, I’m Nikki Yelton, RD, FMCP, a functional medicine dietitian, and I know this overwhelm firsthand. I spent years feeling exhausted, foggy, and inflamed, doing all the “right” things and still not getting better, until I learned that the answer was never one magic supplement. It was a real leaky gut protocol that worked in the right order.
Leaky Gut Syndrome occurs when gut dysfunction starts in the gut lining. As the name suggests, Leaky Gut literally leaks particles from the digestive tract through the gut lining into the bloodstream. This occurs when tight junctions in the gut lining loosen and allow particles to leak through. Over time, a leaky gut can trigger inflammation throughout the body.
Picture the lining of your gut as a tightly woven net. The tiny gaps between the threads, called tight junctions, let nutrients through while keeping everything else out. When those junctions loosen, the net develops holes, and undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria slip into the bloodstream where they do not belong. Your immune system sees these particles as invaders and mounts a response, and that is where the body-wide inflammation begins. This loss of gut barrier function is now linked to metabolic disease and autoimmunity, which is why leaky gut has moved from a fringe idea to a serious area of research.
Since the majority of the immune system is housed in the gut, a leaky gut can have lasting effects on immune function. As a result, immune dysregulation, such as autoimmunity, can arise from unaddressed Leaky Gut.

Leaky Gut can show up as obvious gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as various, sometimes vague, symptoms throughout the body. The most common symptoms of Leaky Gut include:
Digestive symptoms of Leaky Gut are often the most common, including:
When these types of digestive symptoms are chronic, they are often related to Leaky Gut Syndrome and/or other gut dysfunction. Your digestive tract is usually the first place to signal that something is off, because it is where the barrier breakdown begins. If you have been chasing bloating or reflux for months or years, your body may be asking you to look deeper than the symptom.
As previously stated, the immune system is closely connected to the gut. In fact, over 70% of the immune system resides within the gut. When gut function is impaired, the immune system is too. Immune symptoms often present as:
In many cases of immune dysfunction, healing the gut is a necessary first step. The research here is striking. Both microbial imbalance and a leaky gut show up again and again in autoimmune conditions like lupus, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. When the barrier leaks, the immune system stays on high alert, and over time that constant activation can turn against the body’s own tissues.
Chronic, systemic symptoms of Leaky Gut can affect the body from head to toe, including:
Many of these symptoms may fly under the radar as “normal.” However, though common, these symptoms aren’t normal and point to a deeper issue in the body. The gut and brain are in constant conversation through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, which is one reason a struggling gut can show up as brain fog, low mood, or anxiety.
In fact, deficits in intestinal permeability may drive the low-grade inflammation seen in depression, so the fatigue and mental fog are not “all in your head.” They often start in your gut. This is why identifying and addressing Leaky Gut is a critical starting point for holistic healing.

As with all imbalances and dysfunctions, understanding the root causes of Leaky Gut is essential. Until you identify and address the root causes, long-term healing isn’t possible.
The most common underlying causes of Leaky Gut include:
Stress deserves special attention here, because it is so often overlooked. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol directly affect the gut barrier. Research shows that stress can break down intestinal barrier function and shift the microbiome in ways that keep the gut inflamed. This is why you cannot supplement your way out of a Leaky Gut while living in constant fight-or-flight. The nervous system and the gut heal together!
While many band-aid approaches may reduce symptoms in the short term, knowing, understanding, and addressing the root causes is the only way to truly heal from Leaky Gut.
When you leave Leaky Gut unaddressed, the trickle-down effect can deepen and lead to longer-lasting effects. Over time, the progression can lead to autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and other long-term inflammatory conditions. In many cases, people may confuse these long-lasting symptoms with other dysfunctions.
The main problem with untreated Leaky Gut is that it rarely stays contained to the gut. Once the barrier is compromised and inflammation becomes chronic, it can affect your thyroid, hormones, joints, skin, and brain. Addressing Leaky Gut early is one of the most protective things you can do for your long-term health, which is why a real leaky gut protocol is about far more than settling your stomach.
That said, if you are experiencing common Leaky Gut symptoms, it is highly recommended to start working with a trusted functional medicine practitioner. They can help identify the root cause of your symptoms and implement a custom and effective protocol to heal the gut and the whole body.

There are various ways to identify and diagnose Leaky Gut, including symptom analysis and functional testing. Here is what you need to know about accurately diagnosing Leaky Gut.
Yes. In fact, the most accurate way to diagnose Leaky Gut is through functional testing. A variety of functional tests can identify Leaky Gut, as well as other gut dysfunctions that may be at play.
The important thing to understand is that a single test rarely tells the whole story. Testing only for leaky gut can confirm that your barrier is permeable, but it will not tell you why. And the why is everything! Without uncovering the infections, imbalances, or triggers driving the permeability, you are left treating a symptom instead of the source.
It is critical to use functional testing to uncover the root cause of Leaky Gut, not simply to confirm its presence.
These functional tests help connect the dots and uncover the root causes of Leaky Gut. For more information on getting started with personalized coaching and functional testing, check out our program here.

When it comes to Leaky Gut, the internet and social media platforms are flooded with conflicting advice. Generic protocols, or those that use a one-size-fits-all approach, dismiss a person’s bio-individuality. They provide conflicting supplement recommendations, lack clarity on dosage, timing, and sequencing, and often leave clients feeling more confused than before.
You have probably seen it. One expert suggests L-glutamine, another pushes zinc carnosine, a third says you need antimicrobials, digestive enzymes, and five different probiotics. So you buy them all, take them at random, and wonder why you feel the same, or worse. This is protocol fatigue, and it is real. Stacking supplements without data is not a protocol. It is guessing with your money and your health.
Generic protocols are missing the biggest piece of the puzzle: personalization. Without truly understanding the individual, including their health history, root causes, and more, blind supplementation is pointless and sometimes dangerous. That is why it is critical to seek advice and guidance from a professional trained in functional medicine and Leaky Gut protocols.
For years, I was the woman with the cabinet full of supplements and no real plan. I was exhausted, bloated, and doing everything the internet told me to do, and I kept getting sicker. What finally changed everything was not another supplement. It was a sequenced, personalized approach that prepared my body to heal before asking it to. That experience is the reason I created The Abounding 5 Method, so the women I work with never have to guess their way through it the way I did.
Traditional Leaky Gut protocols include the 5 R’s: remove, replace, repair, reinoculate, and rebalance. While this is a decent starting point, it often misses the bioindividuality aspect. We go beyond the 5R protocol using The Abounding 5™ Method, which adds proper foundational support and personalization.

Each phase builds on the last. This order is not optional. It is what makes the difference between temporary relief and lasting gut and total body healing!
First, we target mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells that produce energy. Without enough energy, healing can’t happen. We identify missing nutrients in your cells so digestion, detox, and hormones can improve. We focus on rebuilding ATP (energy) production and stabilizing blood sugar, circadian and biological rhythms, and improving sleep quality for example.
“Test, don’t guess” has been my motto since 2014. Functional medicine testing looks deeper and helps personalize your roadmap with precision. We’re not just checking whether something is “optimal”; we’re closely measuring how your systems function together. Are they surviving or thriving?
We utilize state-of-the-art advanced functional medicine testing to assess dysfunctions and imbalances. This is where your leaky gut protocol stops being generic and starts being yours, built around your actual data instead of a stranger’s supplement list.
Detoxification only works if the floodgates are open and clear. One of the biggest mistakes I see in functional medicine is jumping straight into “kill,” “cleanse,” or “detox” phases without making sure their drainage pathways are open. We make sure your drainage pathways are open so we can remove waste effectively before implementing a detox protocol.
When drainage is working well, clients often notice less puffiness and water retention, regular bowel movements, clearer skin, reduced bloating and brain fog, and a “lighter,” more energized feeling.
Once detoxification pathways are clear and open, you can safely implement a detox protocol to help remove waste and toxins from the body. These toxins may include heavy metals, mold, parasites, and more.
By supporting the liver and gallbladder (two of the body’s primary detoxification organs), you can heal safely and effectively. Skipping this step, or doing it before your drainage is open, is how people end up feeling worse instead of better.
In this final phase, we utilize specific diet, lifestyle, and supplement modifications, including but not limited to probiotics and postbiotics, to target gut repair and restore microbiome balance. This is also where targeted nutrients earn their place.
For example, glutamine plays a key role in maintaining the gut barrier and tight junction proteins, which is part of why nourishing foods like bone broth are so supportive in this phase. Once the gut is balanced, healing can happen throughout the whole body. The gut is truly the nucleus that balances every area!
The Abounding 5™ Method is a science-backed and proven approach to healing Leaky Gut. Here’s why.
Functional medicine testing provides an accurate look at how the body is functioning. Using these results, we can implement lab-driven personalization in each gut-healing protocol. No two women should get the exact same plan, because no two women have the exact same root causes. Your protocol should be built from your labs, your history, and your symptoms, which is why it works when generic plans have failed you before.
The order of healing is everything! Most protocols fail because they start with gut repair or an aggressive detox before the body is ready. We move through the phases in a deliberate sequence: energy first, then testing, then drainage, then liver support, and finally gut restoration, so each phase sets up the next for success. This is the difference between forcing your body and partnering with it in a way that honors God’s design for healing.
True functional medicine programs shouldn’t leave you doing things on your own. That’s why we don’t leave you to figure it out. We work together until you feel your best. Through multiple sessions, we reassess what’s working and what’s not, so we can adjust protocols as we go.
Healing is not linear, and having a practitioner who adjusts your plan in real time is what keeps you moving forward instead of staying stuck.
Healing is physical, but it is also deeply personal and spiritual. I believe God designed your body to heal when it has the right support. For the women who want it, faith is a natural and encouraging part of the journey, and all are welcome.
Once we know our starting point, it is critical to track metrics throughout the healing process. We watch your symptoms, your labs, and your energy improve over time, so your progress is not a guess or a feeling. It is measurable. Seeing the numbers move is one of the most encouraging parts of the journey, and it confirms that your leaky gut protocol is actually working.
Implementing a personalized gut-healing protocol is a necessary step. However, there are other lifestyle factors that can support or hinder your healing, including:
Food is medicine! Adopting an anti-inflammatory diet, including plenty of whole foods, helps reduce overall inflammation and provides your body with the nutrients it needs to produce adequate energy.

Stress is essentially the root of all illness. Finding ways to effectively manage stress is critical. This includes physical, mental, and emotional stress. Additionally, understanding nervous system regulation and introducing supportive practices is helpful too because stress directly affects the gut barrier.
During sleep, the body detoxes and restores. It is essential to get adequate amounts of quality sleep, especially during any healing protocol, and supporting your circadian rhythm can help encourage restful sleep.
Physical movement supports detoxification, metabolic function, and more. Finding ways to gently move your body, without overtraining, is helpful in overall healing. Examples include walking outside, mobility exercises, and low-intensity weight training.
Environmental toxins are everywhere. Intentionally reducing your exposure to toxins can go a long way in supporting your body’s toxin load. This includes toxins such as herbicides, pesticides, mold, heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, pollution, and more.
During a gut healing protocol, supporting your body from every angle can make a big difference. Take baby steps to adjust these aspects of your lifestyle, if you haven’t already.

A leaky gut protocol is a structured plan to repair the gut lining, reduce inflammation, and resolve the root causes of intestinal permeability. The most effective leaky gut protocols are personalized and sequenced, starting with foundational support and testing before moving into gut repair, rather than relying on random supplements.
Healing timelines vary based on your root causes, how long the issue has been present, and how consistent you are. Many women notice meaningful improvement within a few months, while deeper healing of the gut and microbiome can take six months or longer. Personalized, lab-guided support tends to produce faster, more lasting results.
Yes, many people heal a leaky gut and keep it healed by addressing the root causes and maintaining supportive habits. Because the gut lining renews itself, giving it the right nutrients, calming inflammation, and removing the triggers allows the barrier to repair and stay strong.
An anti-inflammatory, whole-foods diet is the foundation. That usually means removing inflammatory triggers like processed foods, refined sugar, and often gluten and conventional dairy, while adding gut-supportive foods like bone broth, polyphenol-rich produce, and quality protein. The exact plan should be personalized to your food sensitivities.
Testing is not strictly required, but it makes your protocol far more effective. Functional tests uncover the specific root causes driving your leaky gut, such as infections, food sensitivities, or nutrient deficiencies, so your plan targets the real problem instead of guessing.
The gut is closely connected to every other bodily system, including your immune system, hormones, brain function, and more. When Leaky Gut is present, it can have detrimental impacts on your body from top-to-bottom. While symptoms are sometimes “common,” they are far from normal.
Most of all, remember this. You do not need another random supplement stack. You need a real leaky gut protocol that works in the right order, built around your body. That is how you go from exhausted, bloated, and foggy to clear, energized, and finally feeling like yourself again.
